Based on the RCMP’s infamous Teslin Lake Incident… a true crime story straight out of CSI or The X-FILES where many believe that paranormal intervention actually occurred.

Sergeant Sharlene Bate of I-HIT, Vancouver’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, pries open Pandora’s Box when two drug informers are brutally executed and a tragedy occurs where two young Mounties attempt to capture a madman terrorizing the Canadian Yukon wilderness.

No ordinary madman, the Tlingit people say. It’s The Kushtaka. The Wildman-of-the-Woods. The mythical being who tricks you, kills you, and steals your soul. Sergeant Bate exhumes more of the Aboriginal legend: After a gun-fight with the shapeshifter, the officers’ souls are trapped in a twilight zone – the world in-between.

So begins a life and death quest for the truth of why the informants had to be murdered. From the treacherous Hells Angels conspiracy in the prisons of America and the jungles of Colombia – to the spiritual journey in a Shaman’s sweatlodge, deep in the Australian Outback – is there a supernatural entity now hunting for Sharlene Bate’s soul?

No Witnesses to Nothing is a murder mystery based on a true, unsolved story that does not need to be sensationalized – it’s as compelling and eerie as a story gets.

In March of 1985, Mike Buday, a Royal Canadian Mounted Police Emergency Response Team member, along with 8 other officers including Garry Rodgers, the book’s author, pursued Michael Oros, a deranged bushman wanted for murdering residents of the frozen wilds near Teslin Lake, Yukon. The day before, Oros ransacked a cabin and fired at the police plane which flew overhead to locate him. That night Oros slept on nearby Shaman’s Island where a well-known, ancient Tlingit Shaman had been buried.

Prophetically, the next morning an elder of the Tlingit First Nations cautioned police that Oros was possessed by a demon known as The Kushtaka which could change shapes and get behind the ‘warriors’ (police officers). She told police that Oros would die for what he did, that the ancient Shaman would have eternal revenge, and that Oros would be dead by noon. The officer dismissed her warning as nonsense.

In the meantime, the pursuing police changed tactics as Oros headed off the open, frozen lake to the bush where he could disappear into miles of dense forest. The team lay in wait on the shore as Oros approached with a rifle. At 11:50 am, Oros blended into thick woods, 300 yards distant. The snow was deep. Travel was glacial. In four minutes Oros circled by, undetected. Garry Rodgers, peering in utter amazement, saw Oros materialize in the brush. With no time to aim his own gun, Rodgers hollered at Buday that Oros was right behind. Too late. Oros fired. And Rodgers fired back.

20 minutes later police found two dead bodies; Mike Oros and Mike Buday. They found that Oros had shot Buday, reloaded, and pulled his trigger on Rodgers. However… the bullet failed to go off… despite no malfunction. Incredibly, Rodgers had returned a shot… 140 feet through thick brush… striking Oros in the head… killing him… and preventing others from dying in the shootout.

Impossible, the forensics experts affirmed. No it’s not, the Tlingit people advised. Oros was the manifestation of The Kushtaka who tricks people, kills them and steals their souls. The Shaman, through Rodgers, stopped the madness.

3D1Moving forward 25 years. The Mounties now have two dead informants, who’s blood is on their hands, and Sergeant Sharlene Bate is swept into a tale of murder and mysticism.

Garry Rodgers’ book ingeniously gives answers to what really happened in our brother, Mike Buday’s, murder. It gives perhaps the only explanation. The story and information in No Witnesses To Nothing has been thoroughly researched and the facts well-documented. Garry Rodgers is a very skilled and talented writer who takes you on a journey with many unexpected twists and turns – a read you’ll never forget.

This murder mystery is based on actual events of the Teslin Lake Incident and of the two drug informants who were executed. You’ll have to read on… to find out why the informants had to be murdered and what The Kushtaka really is. You’ll discover the drug world’s deceit; the good and evil inside us. You’ll discover the spiritual world’s truth that the soul does live on. And you’ll discover the scientific world’s explanation for it all. No Witnesses To Nothing gives you hope, and it shows you that what goes around, comes around; both in life and in death. – Bob Buday, representing the Buday family of Alberta, Canada

I read No Witnesses to Nothing – in one sitting – I couldn’t put it down!
There are so many excellent points about your book; structure, pace
(and that cover!) let alone your highly visualized descriptions –
especially of things I might someday participate in but will never
witness (autopsy)-LOL. I also wanted to say that you created a
stunning description of a sweat lodge.
You will probably laugh at this, but I had to make a book jacket
using a brown paper bag for NWTN – Otherwise there’s no way it could
stay in my bedside bookshelf! – Teri Mason

Who is Garry Rodgers? He’s a retired Vancouver RCMP Homicide Detective and forensics coroner who wrote an awesome book “No Witnesses to Nothing”, that I spent a fair amount of my spare time devouring this week. It’s based on a true crime story, with a supernatural twist and involves the RCMP, Hell’s Angels, a drug-trafficking organization, a  criminal conspiracy that goes back 25 years, the mystery behind the deaths of 2 informants, shamanism and the Kushtaka,a soul-stealing supernatural being. It’s a great story, full of lots of twists and wtf-moments, but what makes this book really amazing is how much of it is based on things that really happened with actual people, and how much of it makes you question the dichotomy of good and evil, what the soul really is (and there is a really interesting explanation for that in the book) and what happens after death. Also, that a lot of this happened in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island where I live makes it extra interesting for me. The book’s editor is one of my boss’s clients and she lent me a copy, but I will be buying a copy of my own because there is so much detail and twistiness, I need to read it again. Two thumbs very high up, and I suggest you give it a read!” – Stacy Rexin, Blogger at http://staceysmaplesyrupland.blogspot.ca/2013/04/writing-frenzy-soul-stealing-book.html

My Mom lent me her copy of your book for me to read & I can honestly say I’m not a big reader. It can take months for me to finish a book & that’s if I like it. I started No Witnesses To Nothing on Monday & finished it Saturday. When I first told my Mom that I was done it already she couldn’t believe it & asked “what did I think?” I couldn’t even tell her. I tried texting words but I couldn’t think of anything to say. I was completely blown away & my emotions were all over the place. Through out the book I would giggle, lol, cry, gasp…never as a book touched my emotions such as yours did. – Heather Cox

I just recently finished reading your book and was moved beyond words, emotionally & mentally. From beginning to end I was captivated. I laughed, cried and was scared shitless at times. I was so young when Mike was killed and unfortunately I have very little memories of him. I never really knew what happened up in Teslin Lake just that he was shot by some crazy trapper. After reading about Teslin and what really happened it’s mind blowing. The book is so amazing and the connections from chapter to chapter were like “aha” it’s all coming together. I gained so much knowledge and respect for everyone involved. Thank you so much, reading the book was such an incredible journey. Looking very forward to the sequel! – Holly Sorbie

Garry!
Meant to email you ages ago.. LOVED your book! I deliberately took my time with it! What a clever human being you are! I can’t even write a bloody greeting card without being stuck! Can’t wait for the next one! – Anita Farrer Coetzer

This story is very dear to my family and I, as I know the majority of the characters, and “Characters” they were. This book pays great homage to “Bude” in a way that only Garry, a true partner in crime, could describe.
Bude was Bude, a true legend and friend. I am very proud to say that my son and grandson have his name.
Garry asked my wife and I to read and give him feedback on the draft of his book. Out of respect for a lifelong friend we agreed. I was honoured, humbled, and somewhat apprehensive, as I am not an avid reader. When I started reading, to my surprise, and my wife’s, I was unable to stop.
Bude’s murder had, and continues to have, a great impact on many people. It took years for me to realize just how much of an impact it had on me. I tried unsuccessfully to justify his death, and I had many weird dreams and thoughts about the unexplained circumstances surrounding it.
One of those, not in the book, was when I was present a few years earlier when Bude was called from the Legion in Terrace, BC, to place Mike Oros in a straightjacket. Oros stated to Bude that night that he would kill him, and he did.
Garry’s description of “The Kushtaka”, shapeshifters, and the soul were mind boggling, as these are some of the things in my weird dreams that made me think I was crazy. I now know that Bude’s death was not in vain and that there is a purpose in life and death for all of us. In this book, Garry was able to answer questions for me – questions that I did not know I was even seeking answers to.
Thank you, my friend. Here’s “Mud in your eye” and may it be “Tilley” mud.
This is an awesome book describing the indescribable. You have to read it!
Philip Noonan, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (Rtd.)

I’m a five-year law enforcement dispatcher. My parents are both police officers. So it’s a world that I grew up in, and a world that I know well. Those men and women are pretty much feet-on-the-ground at all times. They see how the world operates and react accordingly.
But there are some things in this world that can’t be explained, and I always wondered if these straight-laced officers of the law ever saw things that just made them think… huh. That’s not normal.
Turns out they do.
In No Witnesses to Nothing, Garry Rodgers has painted a picture of a world of drug-corruption, greed, and the tiers of people involved in such things. Good cops, bad cops, misguided cops, and criminals. But where his novel veers from the traditional “police procedural thriller” is with the supernatural that is firmly enmeshed in all this normal day-to-day crime. Heavy in shamanic mythology, No Witnesses to Nothing is a thrill ride from beginning to end, and with every page turn, the reader is more captivated by the tangled web of deceit and the slow comprehension that even the most mundane things could be supernatural. – Heather Atkins

I’ve been waiting for the release of this book for some time and I wasn’t disappointed. I downloaded it yesterday and spent most of the night reading. I couldn’t put it down. Garry Rodgers has a huge talent for describing a scene that will burn the picture of what’s happening in your mind. But his prose isn’t dark and ponderous, it’s filled with whimsy and his sense of humor, as well as those of his well-defined characters, shines through. I definitely recommend this book as required reading for anyone who writes crime fiction or those who enjoy reading the latest detective thriller. You will be in for a pleasant surprise. – Renee Benziam

This book opened my eyes, tugged at my heart & touched my soul. I’m not a reader! If a book is coming out in theatres or dvd I’d sooner just watch it, but with No Witnesses To Nothing I finished it in 6 days! I couldn’t put the book down! This is a must read for everyone. – Sheryl Tower

The story grabs you in an unwittingly strange manner, and twists you along to the end. More surprising to me was how upon completion, it lingered in my mind, provoking questions and ideas that had not been present before. I feel a need to reread the story, almost to satisfy or at least revisit those questions. – Joanne Stasiuk

Two things strike me about this crime-thriller that make it original and compelling.
(1) The incredible detail that comes from Garry Rodgers’ personal experience as a coroner and Mountie. His knowledge oozes from the page and you know the story is rooted in truth. The sense of place is also excellent.
(2) The dialogue and the voices of the characters ring true. There is dialect for some and distinctive slang for others. I loved reading that as it sounds so different from what I am used to in England or even the American slang we hear on TV. It’s not overdone though, just tempered enough to sound real and make the characters come alive.
Whether you believe in the soul, or spiritual elements of evil, this is a fascinating thriller. My only issue was that it was too long for me, but then that is a personal reading choice. For those who like to languish in a story, it will definitely satisfy. – Joanna Penn

Garry Rodgers, at one time of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, now serving as a Coroner, has written a Docu–Drama based upon true incidents of huge proportions within the secret world that involves the International Criminal drug-trade, and their behind-the-curtain operations that shade the intricate deceits and twists that churn the story between the law-enforcement characters and the various criminal organizations that challenge – and at time cooperate with each other and law-enforcement. The Characters, many of whom have been based upon the actual people involved in the criminal investigations, bring a living realism to the flow of the story.
Garry’s deep knowledge born of his personal life experiences has imparted a detailed authenticity to the story that few writers have matched. His knowledge and use of Shamanism, and the Northwestern Tribal Indian lore adds a spice to the story that is powerful and unique.
The chronology of Chapter set-up is absorbing and develops into a page-turner that holds the reader captive to the web as Garry spins the tale out. He writes in a visual Show, not simply Tell method that brings each scene to life as if I was viewing a film.
I was especially intrigued by the ending Part 4, and the discussions between the characters in Australia, but you’ll have to read the book to find this out for yourself. – Quincy Fayston

An absolutely fantastic book! The supernatural elements make it stand out from your standard crime novel and that the story is based on true events makes it truly fascinating…a great read that you can’t put down, with some excellent twists that you never see coming. Stacey Rexin

Hi Garry, I just finished No Witnesses To Nothing and just wanted to tell you it was one of the best books I’ve read all year. To know it’s based on a true story, let alone your experience, is just mind blowing. I’m a huge fan now and looking forward to new books in the future. – Anna Bryk
