Just a bit of info about what led to this piece on Yellowstone. A few years ago I took a screenwriting course with Hollywood legend writer Ann Helmstader, and she used Taylor Sheridan as an example of someone who was a Hollywood outlier but was a master of rewriting the old to fit with the new. I then looked into Taylor Sheridan, and found a great piece of advice from him, and that’s to write the story you’d pay to watch. Sounds like you’d pay to watch a story about Rip & Beth.

I will admit my wife and I watched the entire series — we couldn’t pull ourselves away. Kinda like birds transfixed by a rattler. Your analysis of why the show works makes sense, but I have to say that as fascinating as it was, I never could believe many of the scenes. I mean, really – they murder almost every hand who quits? And no one ever misses those men? And they can kidnap a man on main street without anyone noticing? A modern town without security cameras? Right.
Those oddities made willful suspension of disbelief difficult for me.
I was thinking “suspension of disbelief” already before I got to the end of your comment, Mike. My wife said much the same thing, especially knowing a bit about real life policing and investigation techniques. But bravo to Sheridan & Co. for pulling this off. Apparently watching Yellowstone is a better dopamine rush than enduring hours of viewing someone sitting alone in an undecorated room, muttering to themself.
