NITROGEN HYPOXIA EXECUTIONS — A FIRST BY ALABAMA

      I think most states that have approved multiple forms of executions allow the condemned prisoner to choose the method, Kat. Alabama approves electrocution, lethal injection, and now nitrogen hypoxia. It’s on the record that Smith chose nitrogen.

    I suggest a “round 2” of your AI experiment. Ask your ChatGPT friend what a mother of two who’s in the process of being murdered goes through, physically and psychologically, as she’s being stabbed to death.

    Then ask yourself what you yourself, as a retired lawman, would have done to Mr. Smith (assuming you’d had the opportunity) if the woman murdered been your own mother or daughter. My guess is that Mr. Smith would have been dead before his carcass hit the pavement.

    Hi, Garry, my only hangup on this case is that the guy who accepted the job got off with the life sentence and the other two who performed the heinous deed were executed. Haven’t totally reconciled that one yet. Still can’t imagine what would make a minister or man of God, feel like he had to murder his wife for life insurance proceeds to pay off a debt. Couldn’t his church have helped? Had he never heard of bankruptcy?

    Glad you brought up CO. It seems to fill the bill for being fatal w/o being cruel and unusual. I knew a couple who suffered CO poisoning from a faulty furnace. He talked about an awful headache before he lost consciousness but he survived. She did not.

      I have heard of the preliminary headache with CO before passing out, Debbie, but certainly haven’t experienced it myself. From a pathological point, the algor mortis or color of a body in CO poisoning is a striking cherry red whereas in a C02 death the color is blue-gray. Both are very obvious. The reason is that CO2 eliminates oxygen by depleting it where CO blocks it from being absorbed. Here’s a clip on CO from the NIH – National Institute of Health: “Carbon monoxide (CO) remains the leading cause of death due to poisoning in the United States. CO produces toxicity by binding to hemoglobin, thereby reducing oxygen-carrying capacity, and by binding to myoglobin, which may impair cardiac output and result in cerebral ischemia.” This process probably explains the pre-death headache.

    In the past, miners often died from the presence of mine gases, which often contained high levels of carbon dioxide which, for one reason or another, didn’t vent out of the depths of the mines. They carried canaries to let them know when the gas levels were too high–when the canary died, they got the heck out of there.
    Death by CO2 intoxication doesn’t seem to be too painful; could they use that for executions? (Or is it not fast-working enough to suit the jail personnel? ….)

      Good morning, my friend 🙂 Yes, Chat has a ways to go before it develops a personality. It always reminds me of a cop I once worked with who could have aced Jeopardy but had the personality of a pineapple. I have a reasonable bit of experience with CO2 poisoning as well as with CO deaths when I was with the Coroner Service. Both deplete the blood oxygen but it slightly different ways. I’ve always wondered why CO wasn’t used for executions – it’s so efficient plus painless. I guess the gas of choice is N (7) because it’s stable and easy to work with. Whatever the gas, the whole point is to replace the O. It’d be funny if they used N2O. (Booo…)
